Most towns of Hexham's size have a couple of hotel function suites and leave it there. Hexham has a genuine medieval castle, two country-house estates with spas and golf courses, and a racecourse on the hill above the town, all within about twenty minutes of the Market Place. If you are booking a Christmas party for a Tyne Valley business, that is an unusually strong hand to play.

The trade-off is geography. The best rooms are out of town, which means taxis or a coach and, in a hard winter, a contingency plan for the back roads. The town-centre options are smaller but people can walk home. Work out which of those matters more to your team before you start ringing round.

Langley Castle Hotel: the shared party night

Langley Castle Hotel at Langley on Tyne, NE47 5LU, is a real 14th-century fortified castle about seven miles south-west of Hexham, and it runs the most straightforward corporate option in the area: a shared Christmas party night you buy tickets for, rather than a package you have to negotiate.

For 2026 the party nights are Saturday 5 and Saturday 19 December, held in the Stuart Suite at £59.50 per person. That covers a glass of prosecco on arrival, a three-course dinner, tea, coffee and mince pies, and a resident DJ running until midnight. Tickets go through Eventbrite, so a small team can book four places without a deposit conversation, and there are 25 bedrooms on site if anyone wants to stay over.

Best for: smaller teams, and anyone who wants a fixed price per head with no minimum numbers.

Slaley Hall: capacity and a spa

Slaley Hall at Slaley, NE47 0BX, is the Edwardian mansion resort in around a thousand acres of forest south-east of Hexham, and it is the venue to talk to if your headcount runs into three figures. It programmes Classic Party Nights each December alongside private arrangements, so you can either join a shared night or take a suite for your own people.

The festive brochure and dates are released annually rather than sitting permanently on the site, so this is a phone call: the events team is on 01434 673350 or events@slaleyhallhotel.com. Ask specifically about shared versus exclusive, because the pricing and the minimum numbers differ. The spa, pool and two golf courses make it the obvious choice if you want the party to be part of an overnight stay rather than an evening.

Best for: larger companies, and parties you want to build into a one-night team stay.

Matfen Hall: the meeting-plus-dinner option

Matfen Hall at Matfen, NE20 0RH, sits east of Hexham towards Ponteland, about half an hour from Newcastle city centre and 25 minutes from the airport, which makes it the easiest of the country houses for colleagues travelling in.

It is worth knowing that Matfen sells one-day corporate packages bundling room hire, refreshment breaks and a two-course lunch, across a choice of six flexible event spaces. That opens up a format a lot of firms actually prefer to a party night: an afternoon of meetings on the estate, then dinner. Hexham Racecourse: the flexible local room

Hexham Racecourse at High Yarridge, NE46 2JP, is ten minutes up the hill from the town and is probably the most underrated function venue in Tynedale. The Henderson Suite seats up to 120 with a panoramic view over the course, and the private boxes take anywhere from 10 to 80, so one venue covers a departmental do and a small team dinner.

The racecourse quotes Christmas parties on two-course, three-course or buffet formats, which is the useful bit: you are not buying someone else's fixed package, you are specifying what you want. Best for: mid-sized parties of 40 to 120 who want to choose their own food format.

Hexham Golf Club: private dining in a listed clubhouse

Hexham Golf Club at Spital Park, NE46 3RZ, takes external bookings, which many clubs do not. The clubhouse is the listed Spital House, and between the Robb Lounge, the Bates Room, the Spike Bar and the restaurant there is a sensible range of room sizes overlooking the 18th green.

Best for: a proper sit-down dinner for a medium-sized team, close to town.

In town, where people can walk home

The Beaumont Hotel on Beaumont Street, NE46 3LT, is the town-centre answer. It is an independent Victorian townhouse hotel with function space, an AA Rosette restaurant and a festive menu that runs through December, and it is two minutes from the Abbey and under ten from the station. The Heart of Northumberland at 5 Market Street, NE46 3NS, has a private room available to book for functions and a festive booking form each year, so it covers the upstairs-room brief for a team of twenty or so. Call 01434 608013.

For a smaller, better meal rather than a party, Bouchon Bistrot on Gilesgate lays out over two floors with the more formal dining upstairs, and takes private dining and group bookings. A team of eight to twelve is well served there.

Best for: teams who want a taxi-free night and a real Hexham pub or restaurant rather than a function suite.

A daytime alternative

If the party is really a thank-you rather than a late night, High House Farm Brewery near Matfen, NE20 0RG, hires out its barn and buildings for private functions, mostly on Friday and Saturday afternoons, and runs brewery tours. A tour, a tasting and lunch in a barn half a mile from Hadrian's Wall is a better afternoon than most Christmas lunches, and it costs less than a party night.

Booking notes

Shared party nights sell out first and the country-house venues take bookings from the summer, so late September is already late for a December Saturday. Ask every venue the same four questions: whether the night is shared or exclusive, what time the bar closes, whether a drinks package is available or you are running a tab, and what the deposit and final-numbers deadlines are. Then sort transport, because five of the venues here are a drive out of town and Tynedale taxis are stretched thin on December Fridays.
