Christmas Trees in Hexham: Where to Buy and Recycle
Where to buy a real Christmas tree in and around Hexham in 2026, how to keep it fresh, and how to recycle it in January through the hospice collection or the Hexham tip.
Hexham is lucky with Christmas trees. There is a dedicated tree pitch on Tyne Green, a garden centre a short drive down the valley, and three supermarkets on the edge of town that have sold real trees in recent years. When the decorations come down, a local hospice will collect the tree from your doorstep for a donation.
This guide covers where to buy, how to keep a tree looking good until Twelfth Night, and how to recycle it in January. For everything else festive in town, see our Christmas in Hexham guide.
Where to buy a real tree
Tina's Trees, Tyne Green
The most local option is Tina's Trees, a seasonal pitch on Tyne Green by the rowing club entrance. It is the retail site of Northumberland Christmas Trees, a family business selling trees since 1998, and it offers Nordmann fir, Norway spruce and Lodgepole pine. Very large trees, from about 10ft upwards, are sold online through Northumberland Christmas Trees, which delivers them across much of Northumberland and Tyneside.
The pitch usually opens at the end of November and in past years has been open daily from 10am to 6pm. The 2026 dates had not been published when we checked on 3 November, so check before you go. Tyne Green car park is free, which makes it easy to load up.
Tyne Valley Garden Centre, Mickley
Tyne Valley Garden Centre at Mickley Square, near Stocksfield, is about 15 minutes east along the A695. It sells real trees from plantations in Northumberland and Scotland, including Nordmann and Fraser firs, plus small pot-grown Norway spruce. It also offers delivery, and sells wreaths and wreath-making supplies if you want to make your own door wreath. The garden centre is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Supermarkets
In 2025, Aldi, Lidl and Tesco all sold real Nordmann firs in their stores as a seasonal line, from late November while stocks lasted. Hexham has a branch of each: Aldi on the Haugh Lane Industrial Estate, Lidl at Hexham Gate on Alemouth Road, and Tesco Extra on Tynedale Retail Park. None had confirmed 2026 dates at the start of November, and stock varies by branch, so ring or check in store first.
Choosing and caring for your tree
Most trees sold locally are one of two types. Nordmann fir has soft, glossy needles that hold well indoors, so it is the safer choice if the tree is going up in early December. Norway spruce is the traditional, sharp-scented tree and is usually cheaper, but it drops needles sooner in a warm room, so buy it nearer Christmas.
- Give the tree a shake and run a hand along a branch. A fresh tree should lose very few green needles.
- Saw a couple of centimetres off the base when you get home, so it can draw up water.
- Use a stand that holds water and top it up every day, especially in the first week.
- Keep it away from radiators, wood burners and the sunniest window.
If you want a tree that lives on after Christmas, a pot-grown Norway spruce from Tyne Valley Garden Centre can go outside in January. Keep it indoors for as short a time as you can.
Recycling your tree in January
Northumberland County Council
Northumberland County Council's garden waste collection is a paid subscription with 20 collections a year between March and November. There are no garden waste collections from December to February, so a real tree cannot go out with the brown bin in January.
Instead, you can take it to Hexham Household Waste Recovery Centre, French Garden Industrial Estate, Hexham, NE46 4JU. Between 1 November and 31 March it is open every day from 8am to 6pm, and it is closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There is no pedestrian access, so you need to arrive by car. Trees are recycled with garden waste, so remove the stand, lights, tinsel and any metal or netting first. A permit is only needed if you are coming in a van or other large vehicle.
In recent winters the council has also set up extra Christmas tree drop-off points around the county. It had not announced any for January 2027 at the start of November, so check the household waste recovery centres pages on the council website in December.
Tynedale Hospice at Home collection
The easiest option is the Christmas tree collection run by Tynedale Hospice at Home, the Hexham-founded charity that provides end-of-life care across the valley. It covers all Hexham postcodes (NE46 1 to NE46 4) and much of Tynedale. Registration opens on 15 November 2026 and closes on 7 January 2027, and collections start on Monday 11 January 2027. Put your tree out by 8am on the day.
Collection is for a donation, registered online through the charity's partner JustHelping. The charity says 70% of the money goes to the hospice, with the rest split between the Hextol Foundation and JustHelping. Details are on the hospice's tree collection page, or ring the fundraising team on 01434 600388.
Artificial trees
If you are replacing an artificial tree that still works, a local charity shop may take it. Ring ahead before December, as space is tight.
