About St Mary's Catholic Church
St Mary's is the Roman Catholic parish church of Hexham, within the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, standing at Hencotes close to the town centre. A Grade II* listed building, it was constructed between 1828 and 1830 in the Gothic Revival style. Two designs were prepared for the new church, one by the noted architect Ignatius Bonomi and another by the priest Fr Michael Singleton, and it was the parish's own Fr Singleton's plan that was chosen. The foundation stone was laid in April 1828, and after a delay caused by the collapse of the east gable bellcote during building work, the church was opened in September 1830 by Bishop Thomas Penswick.
The ashlar-fronted building is notable for its decorated tracery windows, a shallow crenellated gable bearing the Vatican arms, and a projecting porch with a pointed doorway beneath a crocketed ogee label. It continues to serve as an active parish church for the Catholic community of Hexham and the surrounding area, offering regular worship and parish life.
