Adapt (North East)
A registered charity and social enterprise providing community transport, a cafe and support services for disabled and disadvantaged people in the Tyne Valley.
About Adapt (North East)
Adapt (North East) is a Hexham-based registered charity, company limited by guarantee and social enterprise working to improve the quality of life of disabled and disadvantaged people across the Tyne Valley and wider region. It began in 1995 as a community group known as Action by Differently Abled People in Tynedale, formed to tackle poor access to buildings and a lack of accessible transport. In 2007 it broadened its remit across the North East and adopted its current name, and in 2010 it won the Community Transport Association's Best Rural Community Transport Award.
From its base on Burn Lane the charity delivers a wide range of services, including community transport and a Getabout scheme, wheelchair loan, advocacy and social prescribing. It also hosts Healthwatch Northumberland and a Learning Disability Network, and runs the Hexham Enterprise Hub for local organisations. The on-site Café @ Burn Lane provides a welcoming, accessible space where individuals and groups can meet, adding a social heart to the charity's practical support work.
