Running & Cycling in Hexham

Tynedale Harriers, Tyne Green parkrun, Hadrian's Cycleway, and the steep climb to The Rat Inn.

Hexham.live·

Hexham is an excellent base for both running and cycling. Riverside paths, quiet country lanes, and National Cycle Network routes all come together in the Tyne Valley.

Tynedale Harriers and Athletic Club

The town's main running club, based at the Wentworth athletics track. Caters for a wide range of abilities — from social runners to regional competitors. Regular club nights, pub runs, an annual dinner, and weekends away.

Tyne Green parkrun — Every Saturday at 9am

Every Saturday morning at Tyne Green Country Park (NE46 3SG). The 5km route runs on tarmac and trail alongside the river. Free, open to all abilities, and timed. Walking equally welcome. Register once at parkrun.org.uk. A junior parkrun for ages 4-14 runs on Sunday mornings.

Hadrian's Cycleway — NCN Route 72

The headline attraction for cyclists. This 174-mile coast-to-coast route runs from Ravenglass to South Shields, following the line of Hadrian's Wall. The stretch through Hexham west towards Haydon Bridge combines riverside path and quiet lanes — an excellent day ride.

Tyne Valley Trail and River Routes

Flat, riverside paths through Tyne Green Country Park connect with the town centre in both directions. One of the most pleasant stretches of car-free running or cycling in the North East.

Cycling to The Rat Inn

A popular local challenge. The village of Anick sits above the Tyne Valley, and the final approach to The Rat Inn is famously steep — a quarter-mile lung-searing climb. The reward is a pint at a Top 50 Gastropub with valley views.

Longer Routes

Cycling west along the Tyne Valley on quiet B-roads takes you into the fells above the Allen valleys — serious climbing but exceptional scenery. The lanes around Allendale Town, Catton, and Whitfield form a popular loop.
