Allotments and Community Gardens in Hexham

Council allotments, a garden-sharing scheme, and a community orchard — how to grow your own food in Hexham.

Hexham.live·

Growing your own food has deep roots in Hexham. The town's allotment tradition stretches back over a century, and demand has intensified in recent years.

Hexham Town Council Allotments

Hexham Town Council manages over 100 allotments across three sites: Quatre Bras, Wydon Park, and Dene Park. Plots at Quatre Bras have been halved in recent years as full-size plots proved too large for many people. All three sites are popular and the Council operates a waiting list. Contact Hexham Town Council directly to add your name.

Grow Hexham

For those who cannot wait for a council plot, Grow Hexham offers an imaginative alternative. The project is a partnership between Hexham Town Council, Number 28 community centre, and The Community Grocery. At its heart is a garden-sharing scheme: matching people who want to grow food with households that have unused garden space. Any produce is shared between grower and garden host, with surplus going to Hexham Community Grocery.

Since launching in 2022, Grow Hexham has expanded to include a polytunnel, a community garden at a local primary school, and a community orchard. All aspects of the project are free.

Community Centre Growing Space

Raised beds at Newcastle Road, in association with Hexham Community Centre, are designed specifically for families who may not have outdoor space of their own. Particularly well-suited to children learning about food growing for the first time.

Getting Involved

The waiting list for council plots moves — get your name down sooner rather than later. For Grow Hexham, register through the Spacehive project page or contact Number 28 directly.
