Tynedale Active Travel Corridor: First Stretch Between Hexham and Corbridge Complete
The first phase of the Hexham-to-Corbridge walking, wheeling and cycling route is finished, with new segregated paths and safer crossings in the west end of town.
Getting between Hexham and Corbridge on foot, by bike or by wheelchair is about to become a good deal safer. The first phase of the new Tynedale Active Travel Corridor is now complete, and the changes are already visible in the west end of town.
The corridor is being built with £14.7m from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund, ringfenced for active travel and shared with a similar scheme in Bedlington. When finished, it will run between Hexham and Corbridge train stations, largely following the A695 and linking up the hospital, the school and the popular Route 72 path at Tyne Green.
Best for:
Phase 1 has delivered segregated areas for pedestrians, wheelers and cyclists around the west end of Hexham, new bus shelters near the Country Store, and fresh bollards outside Hexham Priory School. Work has now moved on to Phase 2.
Why it matters for Tynedale
For families in the east end of Hexham and for commuters heading to either station, the new segregated footways and cycleways mean a safer route away from traffic. As reported by Northumberland County Council, the substantial works so far have focused around the hospital, with new street lighting, revised bus stop layouts and drainage all part of the package.
Councillor Suzanne Fairless-Aitken, who represents Hexham East, said families and commuters "can safely cycle to both stations now, and also join up with the popular Route 72 at Tyne Green".
The full route between the two towns is due to be completed in early 2027, with further crossings, an improved pedestrian junction at Peth Head and Dene Street, and traffic-calming measures still to come. For anyone who walks, wheels or rides in Tynedale, it is worth keeping an eye on the diversions as the next phase gets under way.
