A Rainy Day in Hexham

The Abbey, the Old Gaol, Queen's Hall cinema, soft play, bowling, and the best cafes — what to do when it rains.

Northumberland weather does what it likes. The good news is that a wet day in Hexham is actually a perfectly decent day out.

Hexham Abbey

The obvious starting point. Entry is free. The Saxon crypt is one of the oldest surviving structures of its kind in England, and the Big Story exhibition gives the history real context. Allow 90 minutes.

Hexham Old Gaol

A five-minute walk from the Abbey. England's first purpose-built prison, now a museum focused on the Border Reivers. Engaging for adults and older children with interactive displays.

Queen's Hall Arts Centre

The cultural hub of the town. Touring drama, gallery exhibitions (free entry), and European cinema screenings. Check the website for what's on. The cafe is a good spot to wait out a shower.

Wentworth Leisure Centre

When it's genuinely pouring and you have children: three-storey castle-themed soft play (up to age 10), eight-lane ten-pin bowling, pool, and gym. The HIVE cafe lets parents sit comfortably within sight.

Independent Shopping

The covered Shambles area offers some shelter, and the mix of delis, gift shops, and booksellers along Fore Street, St Mary's Chare, and Market Street makes for an unhurried circuit.

Charity Shop Circuit

Hexham has five charity shops within easy walking distance — Oxfam, Cancer Research UK, RSPCA, Save the Children, and Relate. A rainy afternoon rummage is both free and frequently rewarding.
