No.28 Community House Wins Heritage Grant to Tell Hexham East's Story

A community project on the Hexham East estate is celebrating the area's history, backed by a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant.

No.28 Community House — based in a house provided by Karbon Homes in the heart of the Hexham East housing estate — was awarded £9,997 for a project called Hexham East: Our Heritage. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project sets out to celebrate the history of Hexham East and capture what modern life is like in this close-knit community.

The scheme gathers stories about the estate through oral history, reminiscence, photographs, objects and documents shared by residents themselves. The work is being carried out by the social enterprise Digital Voice through its established Geostories programme, which brings people together to discover their shared heritage and explore what shapes local lives.

It is the kind of grassroots heritage work that often goes uncelebrated — not a grand monument, but the everyday memories of an estate and its people, recorded before they are lost. For residents of Hexham East with a story, a photograph or an object to share, it is a chance to see their corner of the town's history properly valued.
