Great Global Greyhound Walk Returns to Tyne Green

One of the world's biggest greyhound gatherings comes back to Hexham this month. The Great Global Greyhound Walk returns to Tyne Green Riverside Park on Sunday 27 September, hosted by Northumberland Greyhound Rescue.

A free riverside walk and dog show

The event is free and there is no need to register in advance. It centres on a gentle circular walk along the River Tyne, with certificates for those who take part, followed by a dog show packed with family fun. Expect a giant raffle and tombola, a cuddly greyhound naming game, a sausage catch and a truffle hunt challenge, with special prizes for dogs rehomed through the rescue.

Anyone with a greyhound or other sighthound is welcome to join, and people simply curious about the breed are encouraged to come along and learn more. Visitors are asked to arrive by 1.30pm ready for a 2pm start.

Best for: Tyne Green Country Park sits on the River Tyne just west of Hexham Bridge, with a large car park, toilets and flat riverside paths. It is free to enter and open all year.

Part of a global effort

The Great Global Greyhound Walk is a worldwide event held on the same weekend across dozens of countries. Last year saw 659 walks take place in 47 countries, and the Hexham gathering drew close to 200 dogs, putting it among the biggest anywhere.

The day is about more than a stroll by the river. It helps raise the profile of rehoming retired racing greyhounds, a cause Northumberland Greyhound Rescue has championed for years.

"Northumberland Greyhound Rescue helped 95 dogs find their forever homes last year," said Jenny Thomas, chair of the charity, adding that the walk shows "what fantastic, loving, calm and versatile pets greyhounds make."
