A Family Weekend in Hexham
Sele Park, the Abbey, Wentworth soft play, Allen Banks, and ice cream — a 48-hour family itinerary.
Hexham is one of the most underrated family destinations in the North East. Here's a 48-hour plan for families with young children.
Day One: Town, Park, and Play
Morning: Sele Park — Green Flag-awarded parkland with a refurbished playground and skatepark. Bring a ball or kite for the big hill.
Mid-morning: Hexham Abbey — The Saxon crypt is dramatic and children respond well. The Big Story exhibition is designed for younger visitors. Free entry.
Lunch: Hexham Market — Grab sandwiches and eat in the Sele if the weather's good.
Afternoon: Wentworth Leisure Centre — 25-metre pool with family swim, smaller pool for under-5s, multi-level soft play, and ten-pin bowling. Three hours easily.
Evening — Ice cream, then walk the flat riverside path along the Tyne.
Day Two: Into the Valley
Morning: Allen Banks and Staward Gorge — National Trust ancient woodland with river gorge, red squirrels, and den-building. The Brown Route (3 miles) suits ages 5+; the shorter walk to the suspension bridge works for younger ones. Free entry, pay parking.
Afternoon: Abbey Grounds and Forum Cinema — Gentler end to the weekend. The community-owned Forum Cinema is cheaper than a multiplex — check what's showing.
Practical Notes
- Newcastle to Hexham by train: ~40 minutes
- Wentworth Car Park: free with parking disc
- The Sele and riverside path are pushchair-friendly
