Best Fish and Chips in Hexham

From a Market Place chippy established in 1939 to a neighbourhood favourite on Priestpopple — where to find the best fish and chips in Hexham.

Hexham.live·

Hexham isn't a coastal town, but it takes its fish and chips seriously. There are a handful of chippies serving the town and its surrounding residential areas, and the locals have strong opinions about which one deserves the crown. Here's an honest guide to where to find your next portion.

Paxton's Fish & Chips

The most central option, Paxton's Fish & Chips sits right on Market Place — hard to miss, and hard to walk past. Established in 1939, it's one of the oldest chippies in the area and has two sections: a takeaway counter and a small eat-in area with around five tables. The menu goes beyond standard fish and chips to include deep-fried haggis and black pudding. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday 12pm-8pm.

Hexham Fish Bar

Out on Priestpopple, Hexham Fish Bar is the chippy most often cited by locals as the best in town. The haddock and cod are consistently praised for being fresh and flaky, encased in light, crispy batter cooked to order. Portions are generous — some reviewers describe them as surprisingly large — and there's a selection of homemade desserts including tiramisu, which is an unusual and welcome touch.

The Sea Chef

Serving the Priestlands Estate in the west of town from St Lukes Road, The Sea Chef is a small family business with over 30 years of history behind it. It's a neighbourhood chippy rather than a town-centre destination, open Tuesday to Saturday lunchtimes (11:30am-1:50pm) and evenings (4pm-7:50pm). The menu extends to beef and chicken burgers, wraps, and kids' meal boxes alongside traditional fish and chips. Online ordering is available and free parking is on site.

Fryers Plaice

Also located in the Market Place area, Fryers Plaice has been described by locals as the best chippy in Hexham with always fresh, good quality fish and batter. It operates as a traditional takeaway and draws a loyal following among residents who rate it above the more prominent competitors.

Hexham's chip shops are varied enough to suit different needs — central convenience at Paxton's, local reputation at Hexham Fish Bar, neighbourhood reliability at The Sea Chef, and strong word-of-mouth at Fryers Plaice. All four use fresh fish and cook to order rather than sitting under heat lamps, which puts them ahead of many larger-town chippies.
