About This Event

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Vindolanda will fire a replica Roman kiln loaded with 200 votive breast sculptures made by Potted History. In the Roman world, anatomical votives were offerings to the gods representing hopes for healing, health and protection. The kiln will also hold wellness-related figures including representations of Artemis of Ephesus and Cucullatus figures, plus health-themed deities handmade by a local Scout group. The project is led by Potted History's Sarah Lord, herself a breast cancer survivor, with proceeds going to Breast Cancer Now. Visitors can watch the firing and learn about Roman votive traditions.
