Photography Spots in Hexham

From the Abbey at sunrise to Hadrian's Wall crags at golden hour — the best photography locations in and around Hexham.

Hexham.live·

Hexham is a naturally photogenic town. Medieval architecture, a working market, riverside paths, and Hadrian's Wall crags within 20 minutes by car make it rewarding for photographers of all levels.

Hexham Abbey — Dawn Light and Interior Details

The west front catches the first light on clear mornings. Inside, the Saxon crypt offers a compelling challenge: low light, ancient stonework, and a narrow column of illumination from the stairwell above. A tripod is permitted.

The Shambles — Market Day Tuesday

The medieval Shambles on market day is most alive on Tuesday mornings. Stallholders, coloured awnings, and bustle against weathered stone give street photographers layered scenes to work with.

Sele Park and the Abbey Grounds

The Victorian bandstand is an underused subject. In summer, lime trees create dappled light; in winter, stripped branches against grey sky give different drama. The Georgian facade of Hexham House forms a strong mid-distance element looking back towards the Abbey tower.

Tyne Green and Hexham Bridge

Walk north to Hexham Bridge — an 18th-century nine-arch stone structure — for reflections in still water on calm mornings. The bridge's arches frame the Hexham skyline beautifully at golden hour. Autumn is strongest: trees turn deep orange and mist sits above the water at dawn.

Hexham Market Place and Street Scenes

The Moot Hall, the Manor Office, and independent shopfronts create a townscape that feels genuinely unchanged. The narrow lanes — St Mary's Chare, Priestpopple, Hallgate — are best with a wide or standard prime lens.

Hadrian's Wall — Steel Rigg and Walltown Crags

Twenty minutes by car, the crags around Steel Rigg offer the dramatic elevated landscapes that define Northumberland photography. Sunrise and late afternoon light carve deep shadows into the stonework. The walk from Steel Rigg car park to the Sycamore Gap site and back is around 3.5 miles.

Practical Notes

  • Tyne Green car park is free; footpaths run directly to the bridge
  • Steel Rigg car park charges apply; arrive early at weekends
  • A polarising filter is useful on the river on bright days
