The Old Gaol, the Abbey's Big Story, Chesters Roman Fort, Vindolanda, and Corbridge — museums within easy reach of Hexham.

Hexham.live·

Hexham sits at the centre of one of the most historically dense corridors in Britain. The town itself holds two significant museums, and a short drive in any direction brings Roman forts, world-class archaeological collections, and centuries of Northumbrian records.

Hexham Old Gaol

Hexham Old Gaol on Hallgate is the earliest surviving purpose-built prison in England, constructed in 1333 using stone partly quarried from the Roman site at Corbridge. Now run by North East Museums, the Old Gaol spreads across four levels with interactive exhibitions covering archaeology, arms and armour, law and order, costume, and social history. The basement — where prisoners were actually held — is suitably gloomy and memorable.

Hexham Abbey: The Big Story

Hexham Abbey dates back to the 670s. The visitor centre houses The Big Story exhibition, which is free to enter and tells the Abbey's 1,350-year history through well-designed displays. Treasures include a Roman memorial nearly 2,000 years old, Acca's Cross from the 8th century, medieval Dance of Death panels, and Saxon grave covers.

Chesters Roman Fort and the Clayton Museum

About six miles north of Hexham, Chesters is the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain. The bathhouse between the fort and the river is the finest military bath building in the country. The on-site Clayton Museum houses Roman sculpture, altars, and inscriptions assembled by the Victorian antiquary John Clayton.

Vindolanda

About eight miles north near Bardon Mill, Vindolanda is one of Europe's most important Roman archaeological sites. Famous above all for the Vindolanda Tablets — thin wooden writing tablets offering unparalleled glimpses into Roman daily life. Live excavations run April to September. The museum holds an extraordinary collection of organic finds rarely preserved elsewhere.

Corbridge Roman Town

Three miles east of Hexham, the most northerly town in the Roman Empire. The Corbridge Hoard — a Roman workshop buried in the 2nd century AD — is a genuine time capsule on display in the site museum.
