Hexham Paper Shop Hanji Moves to Bigger Premises on St Mary's Chare
Hanji, the Hexham bookbinding and paper-craft shop run by Yvette Ja, has outgrown its first shop and moved across St Mary's Chare into the former Bureau of Dreams gallery, with room for family workshops.
Less than two years after opening, one of Hexham's more unusual independents has needed more space. Hanji, the paper-craft shop and gallery run by paper artist and bookbinder Yvette Ja, has moved into bigger premises on St Mary's Chare.
Across the road
The move is a short one. Hanji opened its first shop on St Mary's Chare in November 2024, and has now crossed the street into the former Bureau of Dreams gallery.
Best for:
"I had outgrown my first shop on St Mary's Chare," Yvette told the Hexham Courant.
The extra room means she can run drop-in workshops for families and show larger installations, which the first shop did not have the space for.
What Hanji sells
The name comes from the Korean word for paper, and paper is what the shop is built around. You will find handmade books, craft kits and personalised origami maps.
When to visit
Hanji is open from 10am to 4pm, Wednesday to Saturday. It is worth checking the shop's website or social media before a special trip, particularly if you are hoping to join a workshop.
Part of the Creative Quarter
Hanji is one of the independent businesses in what is known as the St Mary's Chare Creative Quarter, a cluster of makers and small shops on the street. The quarter has held late-night shopping events, which are a good way to see several of the shops in one evening.
